Description

Introduction

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is used in a large variety of applications ranging from food production to medical treatments. It is commonly used as a viscosity modifier or thickener  and to stabilize emulsions in both food and non-food products. It is used primarily because it has high viscosity, is nontoxic, and is generally considered to be hypoallergenic, as the major source fiber is either softwood pulp or cotton linter. Non-food products include products such as toothpaste, laxatives, diet pills, water-based paints, detergents, textile sizing, reusable heat packs, various paper products, filtration materials, synthetic membranes, wound healing applications, and also in leather crafting to help burnish edges.

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or cellulose gum is a cellulose derivative with carboxymethyl groups (-CH2-COOH) bound to some of the hydroxyl groups of the glucopyranose monomers that make up the cellulose backbone. It is often used in its sodium salt form, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. It used to be marketed under the name Tylose, a registered trademark of SE Tylose.

  • What is another name for carboxymethyl cellulose?

cellulose gum

Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a thickening agent that is made by reacting CELLULOSE (wood pulp, cotton lint) with a derivative of acetic acid (the acid in vinegar). It is also called cellulose gum.

  • What are the disadvantages of carboxymethylcellulose?

The drawback of CMC film is its poor mechanical properties. Due to its superior mechanical properties, low flammability, impressive biocompatibility, and greater biodegradability, silk fibroin has been identified as a potentially convenient biomaterial.

  • What is CMC chemical used in detergent?

Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), a commonly used anti-soil redeposition agent as a powder detergent, is also found in some liquid detergent products, as an anti-redeposition agent, a thickener, etc.

  • What is the difference between MC and CMC?

As used in paper conservation, MC is soluble in cold water but not in hot water (either as the dry powder or as the dry film). Sod. CMC is soluble in either cold or hot water. Both, in an aqueous solution, can be diluted to some degree by organic solvents such as ethanol or acetone.

  • Is carboxymethyl cellulose safe to use?

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is considered safe for all animal species. Setting a maximum content in complete diets is not considered necessary. The use of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose in animal nutrition is of no concern for consumer safety.

  • Is carboxymethyl cellulose soluble in water?

CMC is a polymeric material and provides a viscose solution in an aqueous medium due to its high solubility in water.

  • How many types of CMC are there?

What are the types of CMC? CMC can be synchronous or asynchronous, depending on the timing. Asynchronous CMC occurs when participants are not necessarily online simultaneously, as synchronous CMC occurs in real-time.
